Visiting PhD-Candidates

The University of Vienna welcomes visiting PhD-Students from all over the world. This is a non-degree seeking programme for PhD candidates coming to Vienna for a research stay. Visiting PhD-Students have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of activities (lectures, seminars…) at the University of Vienna. As visiting PhD-Student you are enrolled at the University of Vienna and can stay up to one year. It is not possible to receive a degree at the University of Vienna. We cannot provide you with any kind of funding. It is up to you, to take care of any funding you may need. Information on funding possibilities can be found here.

How can I become a visiting PhD?

To be accepted as a visiting PhD-Student it is up to you to establish the initial contact with a potential supervisor at the University of Vienna. This has to be a professor and a member of staff at the University of Vienna. The acceptance by this supervisor is the formal requirement to be admitted as a visiting PhD-Student.

If you are accepted, your supervisor at the University of Vienna has to inform the Center for Doctoral Studies in an email about your acceptance through him or her. We also need a notification from your home university that you are an active PhD candidate at this university. For all further steps please contact the Center for Doctoral Studies.

Upon arrival in Vienna, please come and visit the Center for Doctoral Studies, so we can complete the formal admission and hand you out your students ID and library card. You will have to pay the fee for the Students' Union fee (currently € 19,20/semester), as this is a legal requirement for all students at the University of Vienna. Other than this there will be no other fees from the University side. For more information please contact the Center for Doctoral Studies.
