Doctoral Schools at the University of Vienna

The University of Vienna has announced a call for new doctoral schools starting on July 15th, 2019. By clearly structuring the existing doctoral programmes, by providing intense supervision and by involving doctoral candidates in ongoing research, the aim is to attract and inspire talented young researchers. In addition to courses and learning the latest methods and techniques, doctoral candidates should receive attractive offers, which also include intense discussion about their own research in seminars, as well as open interaction with several supervisors and other doctoral candidates. In line with the research field itself, the doctoral schools can design and offer further services such as organized and funded research stays abroad. In the doctoral schools, doctoral candidates and supervisors have clear rights and obligations that allow doctoral candidates to perform research at the highest level within a reasonable period of time. In order to achieve these goals, the university will devote approximately twice as much funding (approx. €8 million p.a.) as before to doctoral training.

Doctoral schools will run programmes that are sustainable in terms of topics and staff. In particular, they are large enough to be able to form an annual cohort of doctoral candidates from funded and internationally advertised positions. Internationally renowned researchers, involving the deans of the relevant faculties, are welcomed to propose a doctoral school. In order to coordinate the applications, anyone considering applying for a school should informally contact the Research Services Office before submitting the application. There are no submission deadlines, applications are considered on an ongoing basis. There is also no internal competition for school funding: all doctoral schools that meet specific criteria can be funded according to predefined criteria. Successful applications are characterised as programmes that are attractive in comparison to those offered by international reference universities. The aim of the new doctoral schools is to make doctoral education an internationally attractive and visible element of teaching and research at the University of Vienna- to an even greater extent than in the past and therefor offering their doctoral candidates better career options in and outside academia. The first doctoral schools started in the winter semester 2019.

Although participation in schools is voluntary, the medium-term goal is that all doctoral candidates study in doctoral schools.
