Starting your PhD

In order to ensure a successful start into the doctorate, it is adviseable that you clarify following issues before applying for admission.

1. Research topic:

The choice of the research topic is an important decision at the beginning of the doctorate. Although the University of Vienna offers a wide range of research fields, not every topic can be supervised. We therefore strongly recommend you to inform yourself about the research interests of potential supervisors and whether your topic can be supervised by a qualified researcher at the University of Vienna.

2. Supervision

Work on the doctoral project takes place under the supervison of an experienced researcher whose academic competences cover the subject areas of the candidate's research project. As a rule, PhD candidates need to have at least one supervisor at the University of Vienna who is authorised to supervise PhD projects. Please note that admission itself does not guarantee you a supervisor but it is in the PhD candidate's responsiblity to find a supervisor. We therefore strongly recommend you to search for and contact potential supervisors already before starting the admission process.

3. Funding

Being enrolled at the University of Vienna does not automatically include a funded position rather doctoral candidates have to apply for a fellowship or an open PhD position. As funding schemes are limited, we advise you to inform yourself about different fellowship programmes and funding possibilities in due time.
