Visiting PhD Programme

The Visiting PhD Programme is a non-degree-seeking programme for doctoral candidates who wish to undertake a research stay of up to one year at the University of Vienna. After completing their stay, Visiting PhDs return to their home university.

What services can you use as a Visiting PhD at the University of Vienna?

As a Visiting PhD, you are admitted for the semester(s) specified in your application and can:

  • pursue your research activities
  • attend courses and take examinations
  • use university services, such as libraries, IT services and the University Sports Institute

How can you finance your stay as a Visiting PhD at the University of Vienna?

The University of Vienna does not provide funding specifically for Visiting PhDs. As a Visiting PhD, you do not have to pay tuition fees. However, you are required to pay the Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) fee each semester.

What are the requirements for admission as a Visiting PhD?

To be admitted as a Visiting PhD, you need:

  1. Confirmation of supervision from a habilitated academic with an active affiliation with the University of Vienna (usually provided by email)
  2. Proof of enrolment at your home university

How to apply?

  1. Send the following documents by email to doktorat.zulassung(at)univie.ac.at:Confirmation of supervision from your supervisor at the University of Vienna
    • Your Master’s diploma and transcript, or Bachelor’s diploma and transcript
    • Confirmation of your admission to a doctoral programme at your home university
  2. Create a u:account
  3.  Upload the following documents to u:space
    • Upload the required documents via u:space
    • Copy of your Master’s diploma (in German or English)
    • Copy of your identity card or passport
